The Homeboyz 'One Night' Stand.

The 3rd edition of the Homeboyz 'One night' stand was played out at the Nyayo Stadium this past weekend, allow me to call it the one day stand as most of it was played during the day hehe. The would be 12 team tournament was hit by late withdrawals, led by defending champions Avengers, Thika RFC, Daystar and Eastlandoz. 3 of the above were replaced by the DJz (Homeboyz II), Greenfields and Nazarene. The Eastlandoz side was not replaced thus the tournament kicked off with 11 sides, 3 pools of 3 and one of 2. The lucky chaps who were to play only a game at the pool stages were hosts Homeboyz and Green fields RFC aka Touch Down RFC in Pool B. The latter being my home side, yaani team yangu ya mtaa and will from now on through out this post receive endless praises...

The opening round of games were scrappy affairs in most parts, with most sides comprising of amateurs so to say which contributed to the high scores when they came up against the hosts and KCB who fielded strong sides making their intentions clear from the get go. The first round of games ended as so..

1.Djz 32-0 Masaku
2.Homeboyz 43-0 Greenfields
3.Machine 17-0 Stormers
4.USIU 50-0 Nazarene
5.Masaku 0-31 Impala
6.Greenfields w/o Eastlandoz
7.Stormers 19-14 M.M.U
8.Nazarene 0-55 KCB

9.Djz7-10 Impala
10.Homeboyz w/o Eastlandoz
11.Machine 14-0 M.M.U
12.USIU 0-31 KCB

The big scorers, after round 1 hosts Homeboyz who put 43 past Greenfileds in Pool B, only cause I did not play hehe..which was a commendable score line for my guys considering we only meet a few times a week to play touch rugby. KCB the other big scorers putting 55 and 31 past Nazarene and USIU in Pool D.

The winners of the pools would play in the main cup semis with the second placed finishers playing in the plate, the last placed sides would be playing in the bowl. Hence Green fileds RFC were drawn in the Plate competition from Pool B..here is the complete draw for the semi finals:

Bowl Semi:
Masaku vs Nazarene
M.M.U w/o

Plate Semi:
Djz vs USIU
Greenfields vs Stormers

Main Cup Semi:
Impala vs KCB
Homeboyz vs Machine

M.M.U earned a by at the bowl semi, owing to the 11 teams, they would face the winner of the Masaku and Nazarene match. This one was won by Masaku 14-7..
In the Plate, the Djz went down 17-5 to USIU, with a much improved touchdown rfc bravely battling it out against the Stormers but eventually going down 7-0 at the last minute. The much improved part means I played, well there were also other inclusions, people like Kenya international Curtis Lilako, the Kenyan born Ugandan 'star' George Asin...you know the usual people hehe.
In the main cup, the now favourites KCB dismissed Impala 47-0 to claim their passage to the Main cup final. You now see what I meant when I said the Greenfields score against Homeboyz was not that bad. The hosts filling up the other final spot courtesy of a 20-0 win over Machine.
That rather unfortunate loss by Touchdown meant we dropped to the Shield final, against the Djz here are the rest of those finals:

Shield Final:
Greenfields vs DJz

Bowl Final:
Masaku vs M.M.U

Plate Final:
USIU vs Stormers

Main Cup Final:
Homeboyz vs KCB

To kick off the final round, Greenfields RFC  in the familiar green of KCB faced the Djz, it was a closely contested match, hehe well not really. Touch down ran rings round the djz defence at will, one Mike Owiti getting over the line mid way through the first half, Robert Ochieng making it seven from the conversion. The game would go into the break with the score board reading Greenfields 7-0 Djz. The second half was more or less the same as the first, with Touch down dominating possesion and the few times they did not have ball in hand they defended resolutely. The green fields side would stretch that lead to 12 through Robert Ochieng at the corner, the lunky foward just dragging his conversion wide. That was it...okombe in the bag..oh the djz also scored a consolation at the end..we are that merciful..final score Greenfields 12-7 Djz.

In the Bowl, a fresh MMU side beat Masaku 24-0, the plate saw the Stormers who had ponead at the hands of Touchdown in the semi, upset USIU 14-0 to take the plate back to Athi river.

The main cup final saw another episode of the rivalry that is KCB vs Homeboyz play out. Homeboyz, I can't call them the djz here as it would be highly confusing, were making their 3rd appearance in the final, twice before they had fallen to a Mwamba clone. This time round they were looking to make it 3rd time lucky, against rivals KCB who were making their first appearance in the final at the first time of asking. Homeboyz were first to the score board although it was KCB who had asserted the early pressure, Leonard Mugaisi gathering a loose ball and outrunning the KCB defence to the line over a good 50 or so meters. 5-0. The Lions would immediately reply via Kingsley 'side step' Litali, the winger rounding off a KCB attack to score under the sticks Salamba converting to make it 7-5, and as so the half time hooter sounded.
The second half saw KCB turn it up a notch and pin Homeboyz in their half, Brian Omondi charging over the line after great work from Isindu, Salamba converting to stretch the lions lead to 14-5. KCB would not relent and were again on the attack, Brian Sagara falling short after breaking several tackles. Litali would score his second of the day momments later to hand his side the title and cash, final score 21-5.

The tournament was rather an anti climax, coming immediately after the Safari sevens..attendance was to the bearest of minimals, though there was little if anything that the organizers would have done about the dates, as the calendar is prepared by the union. There was however much left to be desired, clarification on the prize money for instance, we all knew the winners would walk away with a 150,000 bounty..as it was announced e.g on Saturday's Nation newspaper and has it has been over the past two years. Whether this moneys were to be divided among the 12 teams this time round or given to one team is what most of us did not get, but  KCB ended up getting 30,000 only..

Anyway let's hope this among the other creeping issues will be handled better next year, so we can have a better tourney..that being said Congratulations to all the winners, and the organisers Well in!

The poster reads '150,000 cash prize to be won''
To my Green fields peoples..wabeeee, thank each and everyone of you guys for a great outing and for reminding me that hii game ni hard..lol! Proud of y'all burgers..shukuruni mababa zenu!!

Finally on the One day stand, during the trophy presentation, think it was for the bowl or plate, where honorable minister Arigi was to hand the team captain the trophy...the captain stepped forward shook Arigi's hand then took off, bila trophy..question is Arigi alifanyia nini kijana? ama aliona Arigi akadai ka hii ndio trophy...wacha ikae!! Guess I should end this statement with a Grrrrrr...(ama ulisalimia huyo jamaa na hiyo sound? hehe)

In other happenings, the Kenya ladies team fell just short of a slot at the next sevens world cup, when they lost 10-14 to Tunisia in the finals of the C.A.R sevens held on Sunday in Rabat, Morocco. The ladies had registered 34-0, 36-0 and 7-0 wins over the hosts, Zambia and Senegal in the Semis. We salute our ladies...Well in masupuuu....

Focus now shifts to proper rugby, hii imekua ikichezwa over the last few ilikua showbiz, ukiblink, game imeisha.
